It's Throwback Thursday! Meet Rebecca, a Reading Partners tutor at Jack Lowe Sr. Elementary School.
What was your favorite childhood book and why?
I actually found my favorite childhood book in 4th grade, long after I had graduated from picture books. I had this goal of reading through my elementary school library, and one day I happened upon Frances Hodgson Burnett's “A Little Princess,” illustrated by Graham Rust. There was something special about that book—It made me believe in fantasy and gumption in a way that was very foreign to me as little girl from a broken home. I never forgot that specific edition of "A Little Princess." It was one of the first things I bought when I left home for college.
Why did you become a Reading Partners tutor?
My mother has always told me stories about my grandmother. “Your grandma only received a fourth grade education,” she’d say. “Education took her out of rural Jamaica. Now she has two masters degrees” Growing up with these stories, I learned love of education and the freedom it allows. At the core of education is reading. My grandmother always said “reading is fundamental.” I’m a Reading Partner because what my grandmother said is true. Her life is testament to the fact that literacy is power. I hope to inspire students to use reading as a stepping stone to change their lives.
